Post-Event Survey: Questions, Templates & Best Practices

A post-event survey is your most valuable tool for improving future events. But most event organisers send surveys too late, ask the wrong questions, or make them too long. Here's how to do it right.

When to Send Your Post-Event Survey

Timing is everything. Send your survey within 24 hours of the event ending — while the experience is still fresh in attendees' minds. Response rates drop significantly after 48 hours, and after a week, most people won't remember enough detail to give useful feedback.

For multi-day events, send a brief daily check-in survey each evening and a comprehensive survey on the final day. This captures feedback while it's fresh and reduces the burden of a long end-of-event survey.

The 7 Best Post-Event Survey Questions

Q1. How would you rate the event overall?

1–5 stars

Why: Your headline metric. Track this across events to measure improvement.

Q2. How well did the event meet your expectations?

Likert scale

Why: Reveals the gap between what you promised and what you delivered.

Q3. Which session or part of the event did you find most valuable?

Multiple choice

Why: Identifies what to double down on in future events.

Q4. How would you rate the organisation and logistics?

1–5 rating

Why: Separates content quality from operational quality.

Q5. How likely are you to attend a future event?

NPS 0–10

Q6. Would you recommend this event to a colleague or friend?

Yes / No / Maybe

How to Get More Survey Responses After an Event

Send the survey link in your post-event thank-you email — when engagement is highest.

Keep the survey under 7 questions — attendees are tired after an event.

Mention how long it takes: "2-minute survey" in the subject line increases open rates.

Share aggregate results with attendees after the survey closes — it shows you value their input.

Use AI analysis to identify themes quickly and act on feedback visibly before the next event.

For recurring events, share a "You said, we did" update showing changes made based on previous feedback.
